MOAB, Utah, August 9, 2016 – The Forest Service has scheduled a public information meeting Thursday, Aug. 18 to discuss the upcoming construction of the La Sal Loop Road. The meeting, which will be held at the Grand County Library from 6 to 8 p.m. will give residents an opportunity to view maps and ask questions about the project.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will begin construction on the La Sal Loop Road in September. This project’s intent is to construct improvements along the ten-mile route to improve safety, repair damaged and deteriorated pavement, and correct drainage problems. The proposed improvements will follow the existing route with minor alignment changes. This work includes resurfacing the asphalt road, constructing a Mechanically Stabilized Wall (MSE), stabilizing slopes along the roadway, repairing and replacing culverts, and constructing a small parking area along a portion of the road. The FHWA plans to begin construction September 2016 and the construction will be completed by November 2017. These project roadway closures will insure that the project will be completed in approximately 1 ½ years instead of 2 to 3 years if closures were not used. This construction project will impact ease of access to popular recreation areas in the La Sal Mountains, such as Warner and Oowah Lakes and the Mill Creek area. However, all recreation sites, campgrounds and trails will remain open during the road work. For access, visitors will need to use either the Sand Flats Road or the south end of the La Sal Loop Road. Access from the north end of the La Sal Loop Road will be impacted. For further information on the project and road closures please contact the Moab Ranger District at 435-259-7155.###
