[ARCHIVED] Accidental Death

NAME: Patrick Flannigan AGE: 65 HOMETOWN & STATE: Moab, Utah

On September 9, 2014 at approximately 6:16 p.m. Patrick Flannigan was discovered in a pool of water beneath a waterfall. The waterfall was Southeast of Goose Island Campground at approximate Milemarker 2 on SR 128. Grand County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and Search and Rescue responded to that location. Attempts to resuscitate Mr. Flannigan were unsuccessful.

The weather at the time of the discovery of the deceased was intermittent and sometimes heavy rain showers and the rain showers create waterfalls from the cliffs along the Colorado River Corridor. It is a popular drive on SR 128 to observe and photograph the waterfalls. The location where the decedent was found was one of those areas where a series of waterfalls are created by the rain showers. Investigators were able to determine that the decedent had slipped from a rock ledge directly above the area where he was discovered and fell approximately 20 feet to the pool below the waterfall. The decedent had been photographing the waterfalls in the area of Big Bend Campground, 6 miles downriver from Goose Island, approximately 30 minutes before he was found and it is believed that he had walked up to the area where he was found to photograph the waterfalls.

Mr. Flannigan was transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
